Dictionary of Colour

A graphic system treating colour as a navigable language of association, location and personal interpretation.

Dictionary of Colour, an artwork by Wong Chun Sunny.

A graphic system treating colour as a navigable language of association, location and personal interpretation.

The 125 × 170 mm cover uses cyan, magenta, yellow and black—the core colours of print—as its visual system. Their overlap suggests an infinite field of possible combinations, while four linked colour rings connect the CMYK system to the broader world of mixed colour.

Process and approach

01

Locate your identity

The phrase “Locate your identity” positions the book as more than a reference tool. Readers are invited to locate a creative identity within a complex colour field and select a palette that matches the intended tone, mood and meaning of a project.

02

Design research

Colour communicates emotion, atmosphere, function and identity across photography, illustration, installation and branding. The redesign argues for establishing a project name and palette early so later decisions remain coherent, much as a brand identity guides a consistent visual language.
